Green Top Grocery exists to serve a diverse community, and we know that great food means different things to different people. We will curate our product mix to ensure that we are meeting the needs of as many core Green Top shoppers as possible while considering ways to invite even more people to experience our co-op. We will be the sole grocery store in a USDA designated food desert and our product selection will reflect our desire to be accessible to all members of our diverse and vibrant community. We want to help community members make their own choices about which products are good for their health, their community and their wallets. To that end, we will keep the following guidelines in mind to balance these diverse needs within our mission.
First and foremost, to support a robust and sustainable local economy, Green Top Grocery will prioritize products from local farmers and producers. For our purposes, we define local as within 100 miles of our store. Beyond that, we will give preference to products with the following qualities (in no particular order):
- Certified organic
- Produced using traditional or natural practices
- Suitable for people with health concerns, allergies or special diets
- Fairly traded and using other socially responsible sourcing
- Humanely produced
- Free of artificial colors, flavors, sweeteners and preservatives
- Environmentally sustainable
- Minimally packaged
- Minimally processed
- Produced by cooperatives
- Requested by shoppers
- Accessibly priced
- Meets community needs, such as WIC eligibility
The following page lists specific ingredients and practices that Green Top Grocery will avoid. If there are specific ingredients or practices that you would like to add to this list, we encourage you to submit those to the co-op for review. Each submission will receive a response.
Additionally, in order to give customers the information needed to make their own best food choices, Green Top owners concerned about a particular brand or item may request that it be “flagged” on the shelf with information to share their concerns with other customers. A detailed policy and procedure will be published prior to store opening.
- High Fructose Corn Syrup
- Trans Unsaturated Fats
- Animal hormone therapies (rbST or rBGH)
- Unfair labor practices (i.e. sweatshop labor)
Green Top Grocery believes in helping customers make informed decisions about their food choices. Therefore, we support clear and transparent labeling of any and all products that contain GMOs and will provide education on GMOs to our shoppers to facilitate informed decision making.
